How to Get Your Clicks to Convert Into Sales
by Timothy Nesbitt
One of the most exciting things when you begin the journey of affiliate marketing is getting clicks or hops to your affiliate site. I remember that feeling quite well. I had just begun as an affiliate marketer and I barely knew what I was doing.
So I created two Yahoo email accounts for some free marketing with Yahoo Answers. I had one to ask a question with and the other to answer my questions with. Of course with the answer directing people to my affiliate link. Now this in and of itself was not a problem and can lead to some sells if done properly but I will discuss that in another article.
So I got a whopping 3 visits to my site. I was ecstatic thinking wow this really works. But of course there were no sales. No big deal I reasoned because I got visitors surely in the future more will come and they will buy.
So I created yet another yahoo email account and asked another question slightly different than the first. So that no one would suspect that I was the same person just trying to market my affiliate product. I had already typed beforehand an even more informative and helpful answer leading people once again to my affiliate site
|
After a few hours I went and checked my account and I was astounded I had well over 500 clicks. My excitement built up I would check back every 20 to 30 minutes to see even more visits to my affiliate site. By the end of about 12 hours I had well over 900 clicks but amazingly no sales whatsoever.
I remember feeling a little bit let down but at the same time optimistic that some of the visitors would at least sign up for the affiliates newsletter and then comeback and buy the product. I waited and waited checking back several times a day to see my statistics only to feel more and more dejected until I finally realized I had to make some changes to my affiliate marketing strategy.
To find some enthusiasm I reached for one of my favorite books of all time the inspiring and motivational Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. After reading his book I felt renewed and ready to take on the challenges of affiliate marketing. I decided I would try Google AdWords once again not a bad idea at all like the Yahoo Answers if done right.
So I began to run my PPC campaigns and once again I was getting thousands of clicks to my site with absolutely no sales. Now you can imagine my frustration that I had just wasted a lot of money and not to mention all of the time and effort for nothing. The reason I was doing affiliate marketing was to make money not lose it.
|
At that moment I decided two things 1. I had invested to much of my money, time, and emotions to just give up and walk away. 2. That I was going to find out exactly how to convert clicks into sales.
So before I spent anymore money on AdSense I was going to get an answer from one of the many affiliate marketing gurus. I sent email after email to just about everyone I could find. I either got back no reply whatsoever or a nice reply referring me to one of their products.
Finally after a couple of weeks I got a reply from a well respected super affiliate. He asked me some detailed questions about my PPC campaign. I answered telling him all that I had done. His answer was so helpful and yet so simple. The essence of what he told me was this.
You are making this way more complicated than it has to be. You are trying to CONVINCE people to buy your affiliate product. Instead you should be directing your efforts on those that already WANT TO BUY what you are promoting and then offer your product to them before anyone else can.. "Wow", I thought "that really is simple."
|
|
He then reminded me to keep in mind that it is not the quantity of visitors to your site it is the quality. You do not want to send visitors to your affiliate site that are just casual browsers on a topic. More often than not they are looking for something FREE. You want quality visitors who are BUYERS.
He continued to explain that I needed to take more time in finding the right keywords. In order to do that I needed to start thinking like my customer. What would someone who is say wanting to make money with their blog be wanting to purchase? What feelings and emotions would they have?
Maybe they were down to their last $200 and they needed to make money fast. So that they could pay their $500 rent. Or perhaps they just want to make an extra $200-$500 a month with the least amount of work as possible. So here is a cheat sheet for you on what the WRONG and CORRECT keywords for this scenario would most likely be.
WRONG KEYWORDS (casual searchers or freebie seekers often use very general words they will get you a ton of clicks and few to no buys) "make money", "fast money", "earn money fast"
RIGHT KEYWORDS (buyers use very specific words and they do that because they already know what they want to buy REMEMBER what I said earlier DON'T CONVINCE instead FIND BUYERS AND PUT YOUR PRODUCT IN FRONT THEM, they usually have a low click volume but those clicks will usually convert.) "how to make money with a blog", "how to make money online part time", "guide on how to start blog", "how to earn extra $500 with a blog"
KEY POINTS:
1. Think like your customer 2. Don't worry about the amount of clicks(they usually are only casual searchers anyway) and instead focus on finding people who are looking for exactly what you are selling to begin with (these are going to be buyers) 3. Focus on your keywords and putting up relevant ads for the best conversions
