Hi regular readers, welcome new readers,
Happy morning, are you all ready to kick off another great business week? I learnt something new this week about how to be a little more productive.
If you have a task at hand that seems just a tad too overwhelming, it helps to break it up into several smaller tasks that you can then spread out and tackle over a period of time. It worked for me and as I was writing this piece, I managed to get some of my old plugins replaced and new ones set up.
At first, it seemed like it would take me hours to get the task accomplished on all the sites that I have. But when I broke it up and did some of it over the weekend and some of it just now, it didn’t seem quite so bad. Go ahead and try it.
Got a great article here for all you new bloggers. Let me know what you think. Send me your questions if you have any and don’t forget as a G3 Ezine subscriber, you can send in your ad to be run free. Details on the Ad Board.
Also before I go, if you’d like to be our Spotlight Netpreneur with the spotlight shining on you and your business for 4 whole weeks, be sure to check out my current promotion. Ads will be run on a first come, first served basis. Only 10 spots left!!

5 Tips From a Newbie Blogger
by Bob Bessette
Having developed a site and written a blog now for a few months, I think I can impart a little bit of advice to someone who may want to start a blog. Believe me, you learn a lot in a short amount of time so even though I am new to this world, I think I can help you out. Here are 5 tips before you get started.
|
|
1) Choose a popular platform.
From what I can tell, most bloggers use the WordPress environment in which to develop their blog. I actually don't. I use SquareSpace which is very easy to use but may not have all of the bells and whistles that WordPress does have.
The reason WordPress has some functionality which may not be found in SquareSpace is because there are so many people using this platform for their blogs. As a result, a myriad of plugins have been developed and can be installed in your WordPress environment.
These plugins can add a lot of functionality to your blog site so this may be a consideration in helping you decide what environment in which to develop your blog. You may want to even test out each of the environments you want to try before you go live. Then you can make a determination on your own before you decided to use one package or another.

2) Figure out a Niche for your blog.
Maybe you want to blog to advertise a product or service that you sell. Maybe you want to blog about a hobby for which you have a lot of passion. Maybe you want to blog because you want to improve your writing skills.
For whatever reason, you need to find your niche. There are a lot of opinions about targeting a niche. Some say to make it narrow but, if you make it too narrow, you won't be reaching a large audience and you may run out of things to say.
If you make your niche too broad then your blog won't be well-defined. I would suggest that you want to find a niche but do not make it too narrow. Allow yourself to blog about a broader area of information so that you won't run out of blog post fodder in a short time.
3) Scope out the blogs in your niche.
Perform a Google search on blogs in the area in which you want to develop your blog. Maybe look at the top 20 blogs in your arena and start reading them. Look at the blog sites and see what they do because, for some reason, if they are in the top 20, they are doing something right. People want to go there and their ratings are high.
Try to see what they do that makes people want to come back and read them. Chances are, once you start reading the blogs, you will see what they are doing right. You definitely want to emulate the successful blogs in your area. But, be careful, don't copycat them. You need to use your own unique style.

4) Ask yourself this question. Can I blog about this topic a year from now?
A lot of bloggers start out like gangbusters and then they hit a wall and decide that they don't have the passion to write anymore. Blogs take a long time to gain traction, if they do at all.
Blogging takes work and your blog will not grow in popularity unless you put in the time. Any of the elite bloggers out there have paid their dues and spent years developing their following. If you are not passionate about your topic then a year from now your blog will be history.
5) Ask your self another question. Will I be able to post regularly?
If you don't think you are going to be able to write a new blog post on a regular basis, then maybe blogging is not for you. Some people post every day. Others post every couple of days. Others post every week. Whatever your frequency is, you should stick with it.
Your readers will get a feel for when a new blog post will be coming out and if it isn't regular then you could lose readership. It is also important for you to maintain a goal of posting on a regular basis. This is also important for search engines because the more updates to your sites the better.
Blogging is not for everyone so I suggest that you take my advice and do your homework before you even start. This will get you started on the right track to a very rewarding blogging career.
