Ten Tips For Managing Your Personal Branding
by Tanya M Black
When I was in kindy, there was a dizzy little blonde who would stand in the middle of the playground and say, "Who wants to see my undies?" The little boys really liked her.
As I've grown older, little has changed. Despite the constant barrage of political correctness and holier than thou self perceptions, we are still primal creatures who like looking at pretty things and even though most of us would claim not to, we form our judgements based primarily on unconscious perceptions and behaviours.
How important are appearances when it comes to business and self branding? Some would argue that the skills of the worker or business are more important, but the fact remains that advertising and media industries are still some of the highest revenue businesses because they know that appealing appearances and perceptions equate to dollars.
Most of our perception of a person is made before the've even spoken. We judge others by their appearance, clothing, body language, odour and mannerisms. Of course the perception can change over time, however first impressions still hold a steady ground. Being aware of this can put you at a distinct advantage. By making an effort and being conscious of your appearance, you can control to a degree what image you project.
Appearance has little to do with natural attractiveness but more-so with what you are projecting but if you are naturally attractive, you should use it to your advantage as it is just as much a gift as a good brain or musical ability. I used to apologise or feel self conscious about being brainy in school and played it down and also hunched and stooped because of my height. I've since learned that these are things that are a part of me and something to accept and use to my advantage. Never apologise for who you are, enhance your assets and be confident.
So with no further ado, here's a few tips for personal branding:
|
|
10: Decide on what 'image' you want to project
What message do you want to convey?
Think of these people and the images that come to mind. All of them have strong personal branding:
* Jackie Onassis * Audrey Hepburn * JFK * Donald Trump * Johnny Depp * Richard Branson
Get the idea?
9: Include a photo on your Business card and Curriculum Vitae
Adding a photo to your CV puts a face to your application and sets you apart from the others because it gives the potential employer an idea of the image you will portray for their company. Having a photo on your business card builds rapport without you having to even be there. When someone sees your image regularly and if you look friendly, it can increase your business potential. The fridge calendars that Real Estate Agents send out each year a brilliant marketing tool for just that reason. If someone sees your face every day, you'll be the first point of call when they need an agent.
8: Have a few simple classic pieces in your wardrobe
When it comes to business, even though it's nice to have your own personal flair, a simple black and white suit conveys professionalism and is always a good fallback for any networking events. Have some accessories that match your personality but this one is a staple must-have for any businessperson.

|
7: Clean your shoes
There's no point in having a crisp wardrobe and finishing it off with scuffed and dirty shoes. Even if you do a lot of walking, have a pair of shoes for walking and a good pair in the car for appointments or professional meetings. Keep your shoes clean and polished.
6: Keep your hair and fingernails clean and tidy
As an artist, this one's a bit tricky, but if I am going to a professional meeting, I pull out the bottle of turpentine and get all the paint drips off.
If you've got flyaway hair, have some nice clips and pins to pull it away from your face.
5: Smile
Even if you don't feel like smiling, pretend and eventually your mood will catch up with your actions. Think of something that made you laugh recently and you will find yourself smiling. People like to work with happy people. Smiles are contagious and disarming. If you are in a meeting where there is some conflict, force yourself to smile. Make sure it's not a smirk though - this can work against you.
|
|
4: Be aware of your posture
Imagine that you are a string puppet and there is a string coming from the top of you head that runs right down your spine. As the pupeteer pulls the string, your head raises up, and you body falls into alignment. This is a good visualisation exercise for finding a comfortable posture without straining. You will often find you yawn just after doing this exercise as it lifts the tension from your diaphragm and your body draws in the oxygen it's been missing. Having good posture projects confidence. People are attracted to confidence.
3: Drink plenty of water
If you speak a lot for work or walk a lot, remember to always have a glass of water on standby. Staying hydrated helps you think clearer and makes your skin look healthier and more radiant.
2: Smell good
If you're prone to sweating and body odour, don't try to mask them with overwhelming perfumes and colognes. Find a suitable antiperspirant or power and use that. Perfumes and colognes are supposed to enhance your natural pheromones, not mask your whoofy armpits.
1: Think of someone you like
This one is particularly good if you are about to go into a meeting with someone you don't get along with or find intimidating. If you think of someone who makes you smile, laugh and feel relaxed, your posture and face will project how you feel when you are around that person and in turn relax you. When you convey a relaxed persona, others tend to fall in sync and it makes communication easier.
Be yourself, but be the best self you can be.
